Originally, gifted education meant simply “education for the gifted.” Soon, educators realised that the principles and methods of gifted education would enrich learning for all children. Imagine Classroom A – large class size, high student:teacher ratio, lecture-based teaching, tests that assess only memory and writing speed, and a one-size-fits-all philosophy. Sounds familiar? It should – this is the reality in most Indian classrooms. Now imagine Classroom B – small class size, frequent student-teacher and student-student interaction, scope for independent and hands-on learning, and tests that assess application and original thinking. Given the option, most children would prefer Classroom B.
The problem? Many teachers argue that given current conditions, we simply don’t have the resources to implement Classroom B. Here is one of the abiding myths regarding gifted education: that it’s expensive and difficult to implement. This is simply not true. Developing a gifted education lesson plan takes effort, but it can be done with easily accessible materials.
The payoffs?
Our teacher training workshops expose participants to gifted education in a hands-on format. Participants work in groups to develop a gifted education lesson-plan within the constraints of their school system. Here you will learn how to implement the principles of gifted education to enrich the classroom learning experience for all students.
