Who is a Twice-Exceptional Child?

A twice-exceptional child demonstrates advanced performance or potential in one or more areas and at the same time demonstrates one or more learning/psychological disorders or disabilities.  The following children would be called twice-exceptional:

1) A child with ADHD who demonstrates exceptional leadership potential.

2) A child with autism who has an exceptional visual memory.

3) A visually-impaired child who with exceptional interpersonal ability.

4) A child with dyslexia with excellent oral language ability and advanced vocabulary.

Within the population of gifted children, twice-exceptional children constitute a special category.  Twice-exceptional are at increased risk for never being identified as gifted.  Their disorder or disability may be identified and they may receive remedial or special education without simultaneous attention to their gift.  Conversely, twice-exceptional children may use their gift to mask their disorder, so that neither the gift nor the disorder is recognised.  One researcher notes the example of a young gifted child who was completely deaf, yet was able to understand language by reading lips.  The diagnosis of his hearing disability was delayed.

It is important to identify both the disorder and the gift of twice-exceptional children as early as possible.  Early identification and appropriate intervention optimise the development of their gifts, as well as the remediation of their disorder.  Both types of intervention together are necessary in order to optimise overall adjustment. 

Developing Gifted Education Curricula and Resources

As a subject-matter expert or educator, one of the areas on which NAGE-India can benefit from your collaboration is in developing curricula and resources for gifted education for India.

 Gifted Education will be included in the revised curriculum of the B.Ed. syllabus, and will also be an option for specialisation at the D.Ed level.  Currently, gifted education constitutes only a small portion of the B.Ed syllabus, with no practical exposure for teacher trainees.

 NAGE-India wants to involve collaborators in developed appropriate curricula for gifted education at several levels:

1)    Developing the B.Ed. gifted education curriculum.

2)    Developing teacher training resources for gifted education outside the B.Ed. curriculum.  This includes certificate courses, part-time courses, online courses, and summer workshops for teachers.

3)    Developing science and mathematics curricula for gifted children ages 3-15.  We need to developed activities and resources which can enrich learning for gifted children within the constraints of mainstream schools.

 In the endeavour to nurture gifted children and to develop the proper educational framework, we need a collaborative effort between subject-matter experts, educators, educational researchers, and educational policymakers.
